Father John Molloy

Father John Molloy passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 4, 2013 in his 88th year.  Born in St. Mary’s, St. Mary’s Bay, NL, he studied for the priesthood at St. Augustine’s Seminary in Toronto, Ontario.  On June 2, 1953, at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Port au Port West, NL, he was ordained as a priest for the Diocese of St. George’s by Bishop Michael O’Reilly.

Father Molloy served in many parishes throughout the diocese, including Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Lourdes, St. Joseph’s Parish in Harbour Breton, Our Lady of the Cape Parish in Cape St. George, St. Joseph’s Parish in St. George’s, Maria Regina Parish in Port au Port East, Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Port au Port West and Holy Rosary Parish in Pasadena.   In 1988 he went to Holy Family Parish in Port au Choix, from where he retired from parish ministry in 1991, and became chaplain of Western Memorial Regional Hospital. He served in that ministry from 1991 until his retirement in 2010 at the age of 85.

Father John loved gardening and was well-known for his efforts to beautify the grounds of all the parishes in which he ministered.  His love of the gift of music was evidenced by the joy he took in singing and playing the piano.

During his time as chaplain at WMRH he was well-respected by the staff, and his generous pastoral care was appreciated by the patients and their families.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 7th, at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Redeemer in Corner Brook from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 pm (Prayer Vigil at 8:00 pm)

The Funeral Mass will be on Wednesday, May 8th, at the Cathedral at 10:30 am with the Most Reverend Peter Hundt, Bishop of the Diocese of Corner Brook and Labrador, as the chief celebrant.

May his soul and the souls of the faithfully departed rest in peace. Amen.
