Collection for the Needs of the Church in Canada

Every year, the Bishops of Canada make an appeal for financial assistance to support its work through the Collection for the Needs of the Church in Canada. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) is the national assembly of Catholic Bishops in Canada, including the Eastern Catholic Churches of Canada.

As explained by the President of the CCCB, the Most Reverend Richard Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton,

This collection is intended to support the work of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) and of each diocese. It helps dioceses meet their annual per capita contribution to the CCCB, while any collected funds that exceed that amount are then at the disposal of the dioceses for their own pastoral needs. “

This past year was marked by several pastoral projects initiated by the CCCB, including the National Week for Life and Family, which is part of the pastoral plan for life and family. The CCCB also published a number of educational materials and resources to support the work of the dioceses in teaching the faith. In addition, the CCCB helped to coordinate the participation of over 1,000 young Canadians at World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during July. An overview of the year’s activities can be found on the CCCB webpage.

“The life of the universal Church has been marked by extraordinary events during 2013,” Archbishop Smith states in his letter to parishes. “This year of exceptional transition is a reminder once again that our Church continues to be called to mission and service to our world. Both Pope Francis, and Pope Benedict before him, have constantly emphasized the importance of the Church’s engagement in charity, service and solidarity.”

Please be generous in your financial support of this Special Collection for the Needs of the Church in Canada. And please remember to support your Bishops and their important work through your prayers.
