Share Lent 2016

Development and Peace is the official international development organization of the Catholic Church in Canada. For almost 50 years, Development and Peace has supported agricultural and educational programs as well as community action in developing countries. They have also advocated for peace and human rights.

Each year, Development and Peace runs a fund-raising campaign entitled Share Lent. The stated purpose of this campaign is threefold:

1. To educate Canadians about international development;

2. To raise funds;

3. To renew the spirit of Lent.

The theme for the Share Lent 2016 campaign is Create a Climate of Change. Many of our actions – such as wasting food, polluting or throwing lots of garbage in landfills – harm the environment in ways which contribute to climate change. But it is frequently those who live in the Global South who must live with the effects of this climate change – droughts, typhoons and floods among others. This Lent, inspired by the Jubilee Year of Mercy called by Pope Francis and by his encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si’, we called to help in creating a climate of change by doing our part to reduce our harmful impact on the environment.
