The Mass of Chrism

The Chrism Mass is celebrated annually by the bishop and priests of a diocese in communion with their people. It is meant to publicly express the unity of the diocese and the unity of the priests with their bishop, as well as to celebrate the institution of the priesthood and priestly service. It is at this Mass that the sacred oils used in the celebration of sacraments are blessed: the Oil of Catechumens, which is used in Baptism, the Oil of the Sick, which is used in the Anointing of the Sick, and the Oil of  Sacred Chrism, which is used in Baptism, Confirmation and Ordination.
