The Joy of Married Love

The CCCB has issued a statement marking the 50th anniversary of the Encyclical Humanæ Vitæ, which falls on 25 July 2018. The text, titled The Joy of Married Love, presents the teaching of Humanæ Vitæ in an accessible and uplifting style aimed at inspiring and providing encouragement to married couples. It was developed jointly between the CCCB’s Commission for Doctrine and The Catholic Organization for Life and Family (COLF).

The idea for this text originated at the 2017 Plenary Assembly as one of the suggested priorities. Subsequently, the Permanent Council endorsed it as one of the Commission for Doctrine’s 2017-2018 priorities, specifically: to develop a short pastoral letter in collaboration with COLF to mark the 50th anniversary Humanae Vitae, noting the continuing implications of the Encyclical, as well as acknowledging Pope John Paul II’s teaching on the subject, popularly referred to as the Theology of the Body, in view of encouraging a more favourable reception of Humanae Vitae. In addition, the statement intends to incorporate the newest insights, perspective, and reflections from Pope Francis as they are found in the post-synodal apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia. The present statement echoes an earlier text of the Commission, Created for Love.
