Father John Collins

Father John Collins passed away peacefully yesterday, September 17, 2012, at the age of 77. Born in Lamaline, NL , he studied for the priesthood at All Hallows Seminary in Ireland. On June 11, 1960, at the Bascilica-Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in John’s, NL he was ordained as a priest for Diocese of St. George’s by Archbishop P.J. Skinner.

Father John spent time at the Cathedral Parish in Corner Brook and in St. Alban’s before being appointed as pastor to Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Piccadilly. From there he went on to serve as pastor of St. Columcille Parish in St. Fintan’s, Holy Rosary Parish in Pasadena, Sacred Heart Parish in Curling, St. Joseph’s Parish in St. George’s and Immaculate Conception Parish in Deer Lake from where he retired in 2001.

While in St. Fintan’s Father Collins oversaw the construction of a church in Heatherton, a mission of St. Columcille, and in 1977-78 the construction of a new church in Pasadena.

During his time in the diocese, Father Collins served as Vicar General and as a member of the College of Consultors.

Father Collins was always generous in the service he gave to the diocese. He was known as a kind, caring and gentle person with a wonderful sense of humour. He will certainly be missed by all who knew him.

The Funeral Mass for Father Collins will be celebrated at St. Stephen’s Church, West Street, Stephenville on Thursday, September 20 at 10am. The principal celebrant will be the Most Reverend Peter Hundt, Bishop of theDiocese of Corner Brook and Labrador.

May his soul and the souls of the faithfully departed rest in peace. Amen.
