On Sunday, May 13th, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Ascension. The Bible tells us that Jesus ascended into heaven on the 40th day after the Resurrection, so the Ascension falls on the Thursday of the sixth week of Easter. However, in Canada, as in a number of other countries, the observance of this feast day has been transferred to the following Sunday, the seventh Sunday of Easter.
The Feast of the Ascension celebrates the day that Jesus, in the presence of the apostles, ascended bodily into Heaven. Before He ascended into Heaven, Jesus commissioned the apostles to “Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation” (Mk 16:15). Also. 4 While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father…. You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9 (Acts 1: 4,9)
This is what the Catechism of the Catholic Church says about the Ascension.
