Categories: General Date: Sep 18, 2018 Title: Birthday Wishes
On behalf of the people of the diocese, Bishop Hundt wishes to extend birthday wishes to Msgr. Roderick White on the occasion of his 95th birthday on September 19. Since his ordination to the priesthood on April 8, 1951, Msgr. Roddy has served in many parishes throughout the diocese, and fulfilled many roles within the diocesan structure.
Happy birthday, Msgr. Roddy, with prayers and best wishes from Bishop Hundt and the people of the Diocese of Corner Brook and Labrador. We thank you for your devotion to your ministry over the years and for sharing your gifts of music and love of history with all of us.
Monsignor White studied at St. Augustine’s Seminary in Toronto and was ordained as a priest for the Diocese of St. George’s in his home parish of St. Joseph’s in St. George’s by Bishop Michael O’Reilly on April 8, 1951. He has served in many parishes throughout the diocese.
Monsignor was a member of the Board of Consultors for the Diocese, a member of the Board for the Association of Roman Catholic School Boards, and represented western Newfoundland on the Board of Directors of St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s. Upon the resignation of Bishop McGrath in 1985, Monsignor served as Administrator of the Diocese of St. George’s and served as Vicar General from 1986-1990. He was appointed Prelate of Honour, with the title of Monsignor, in 1978 by Pope John Paul 1.
Monsignor White has two great passions – music and history. He continues to ask Bishop Hundt to join with him in singing Salve Regina during his visits. On the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the Diocese of St. George’s in 2004, the diocese published “Pioneer Days and Pioneer People in the Roman Catholic Diocese of St. George’s, NL” written by Monsignor White.
