We welcome Father Augustine Gabriel Selvanathan, a priest of the Clerical Congregation of the Missionaries of Faith, to our Diocese. Father Gabriel was ordained to the Priesthood in 2006 at Our Lady’s Church, Nangathur, India. He has served in several parishes in his native India, and now comes to our Diocese with his Congregation’s blessings to work with us in pastoral ministry.

Effective June 7, Father Gabriel has been assigned as an Associate Pastor to the Cathedral Parish in Corner Brook where he will begin a period of enculturation under the guidance of Monsignor Gale.

We thank Father Gabriel for his generosity of spirit in coming to our Diocese and assure him that he will be met with hospitality and continued prayers for God’s blessings.

Rio+20 (the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development) will take place in Rio de Janeiro from 20-22 June 2012. There we will see another attempt to provide the global leadership needed to define pathways to a safer, more equitable, cleaner, greener and more prosperous world for all.
We add our voice to those who are rallying to encourage their governments not merely to sign documents that promise good things, but to reclaim and advance an ethical and equitable global vision. We must be attentive to what is happening at Rio+20, in our own country and our own province, in our own local communities and our own homes.

Dear People of the Diocese,

Yesterday it was officially announced that the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, has issued a decree dismissing Raymond Lahey from the clerical state. This penalty of dismissal was imposed as a result of the harm and scandal caused by his actions. The effect of this decree is the loss of the rights, offices, and functions of the clerical state. That he has received such a severe penalty is an indication of the seriousness of his offences and of the effect they have had upon others.

CCCB Statement

On May 4, 2011, then Bishop Raymond Lahey entered a plea of guilty in civil court to the possession of child pornography. He was sentenced in accordance with civil law on January 4, 2012. It remained for the Holy See to follow the canonical procedures in effect for such cases to determine what appropriate disciplinary or penal measures would be imposed. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has now been informed by the Holy See that Raymond Lahey has been dismissed from the clerical state.

My thanks go out to Father Vargees Devasahayam for his generous service to the Diocese and to the faithful People of God.

A new Native saint!

The Innu and Inuit peoples of Labrador, and the Mi’kmaq (the plural of Mi’kmaw) peoples of Western Newfoundland all share in the collective joy of the whole Church as she points out a shining example of heroism amongst the People of God, and one that they can call their own. On  October 21st of this year, she will be officially recognised as a saint.

It is with great sadness that the Diocese mourns the death of Father Joseph Kelly. He passed away Sunday, February 26th, 2012.

Corner Brook and Labrador Diocese is very pleased to welcome Fr. Vitus Echedo. He comes to us from Nigeria, having known Fr. Anthony Nwaohiri beforehand. A young and energetic man, Fr. Vitus was Ordained seven years ago and is excited to be outside his home country for the first time. He is currently posted to St. Stephen’s Parish to work alongside Fr. O’Quinn in ministry. May the Good Lord bless all of his work here among our people!

The Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes has a fine accomplishment to celebrate! In the interest of beautifying the Parish church, as well as providing new facilities, several additions have been completed.
